The lack of skilled workers to support Wisconsin's manufacturing growth is an immediate and long-term challenge that can only be resolved through a collaborative approach between industry, educators and the government.
A distinguished panel of guests will provide their insights into the issue and the approach their organizations are taking to help Wisconsin be the first state to overcome this challenge.
Reggie Newson is Secretary of the Department of Workforce Development - the state agency charged with building and strengthening Wisconsin's workforce in the 21st century and beyond.
Newson will share how his agency is playing a leading role on the new College and Workforce Readiness Council to ensure and sustain a skilled workforce in the years ahead. Representing stakeholders and partners, the Council will work to improve student readiness for college and careers through a variety of measures, including designing shorter and less costly degree programs aimed at filling high-need positions.
Specifically, Newson will share information about how the Youth Apprenticeship program is helping manufacturers develop the talent needed for growth.
Daniel Clancy, President and State Director of the Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS) will outline how the tech college system is collaborating with manufacturers to develop specific training programs that prepare students to move from school directly into skilled jobs.
Jim Morgan is Vice President of the Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce. In this panel presentation, Jim will share what he learned from the 300+ manufacturers he interviewed over the past few months. Wisconsin, along with much of the nation, currently faces a workforce paradox -- unemployment rates higher than most current workers can remember, and manufacturers limited by their ability to find skilled workers.
